The Law on balanced regional development (22.05.2007 year) prescribes the establishment of planning regions in Macedonia, as functional territorial units for development planning needs and for implementation of measures and instruments to promote development. The established planning regions correspond to the statistical regions defined by the nomenclature of territorial units for statistics NTES-3, in order to provide a statistical basis for planning the development of the regions. Macedonia has 8 planning regions: Vardarski, East, Southwest, Southeast, Pelagoniski, Poloshki, Northeast, and Skopje. According to the legal framework, planning regions are the basic unit for development planning in the Strategy for regional development.
The Southeast planning region includes ten municipalities and their Mayors constitute the Council of Southeast planning region.
