In Strumica on 13th of July 2018 the third work meeting was held within the project “South East Europe Urban Resilience Building Action Network” – SEE URBAN, which the Centre for development of the South-East planning region is implementing in partnership with UNDP and it is financed by European Union Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Programme (DG ECHO).
One of the topics discussed at this meeting was the management of the disasters risks in urban areas. Because we have an uneven distribution of people in cities and rural areas, i.e. a rapid increase in the population in cities, it is necessary to strengthen the capacities and promote cooperation between the cities in the region in dealing with natural disasters.
The best experiences of the neighboring countries, partners in the project, the problems they face and the way they deal with them, were also shared. Because disasters do not know boundaries, a single coordinated response and strong cross-border cooperation is needed.
Participants at the meeting were representatives from UNDP and CDSEPR, representatives from the 10 Municipalities in the South-East region, representatives from the national disaster risk management agencies, their local Centers, as well as other stakeholders and bodies working to reduce the risk of disasters.
It was also discussed about the forthcoming regional conference, which will be held on 15 and 16 October, 2018 in Skopje, with more than 120 guests from different countries of the world.
Deadline for implementation of the project is 31.12.2018.
Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) is part of the package for external relations. IPA and other elements of the package are a great opportunity for streamlining and simplifying the procedures of the European Commission and improving the coherence and coordination of the activities of the Commission.
